Temporary News Editor

Sky & Telescope, the world’s leading magazine for amateur astronomers, is accepting applications for a temporary editorial position to replace a staff editor on maternity leave. The Temporary News Editor will write and edit 1-2 astronomy news stories daily for the Sky & Telescope website, as well as compile monthly news roundups in the magazine’s News Notes column. Reporting to the Editor in Chief, the Temporary News Editor will work closely with the other editors as well as members of the design team on a daily basis.

The position will last approximately 14 weeks, with a start date of September 17, 2018. The editor may work remotely but must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Commission news stories for the website from our freelancer pool, establishing terms (deadline and payments) and handling paperwork via accounting system
  • Edit and post news stories
  • Write news pieces for the website as needed, including 500- to 800-word stories and weekly collections of 100-word wrap-ups
  • Stay abreast of astronomy news via multiple channels, including but not limited to the AAS press release list and reading the astrophysics preprint archive
  • Edit News Notes department for the monthly issue, which includes compiling and abbreviating the most recent news stories published online, gathering images, and revising page proofs
  • Miscellaneous tasks, such as responding to reader queries, approving website comments, and tracking analytics

Skills

  • Proficiency in the science and hobby of astronomy
  • Demonstrated ability to explain science with accuracy and approachability
  • Nose for newsworthy stories that will engage our audience
  • Editing experience
  • Working knowledge of WordPress
  • Knowledge of techniques for search engine optimization
  • Ability to balance multiple tasks and remain on schedule
  • Familiarity with In Design preferred but not required

Education

Ideal applicants will have a background in professional or amateur astronomy as well as a background in journalism, writing, and/or editing. Undergraduate or graduate degree(s) in astronomy and/or writing preferred.
